The Darkened Home

Description

The second in a series of three illustrations I did for an extract from Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood for my holiday work last summer (the extract was from the very beginning).

In this one we enter one of the dark houses where the people are sleeping. Like in the first image, I stayed away from using black and instead used different colours to create an impression of darkness, using shading to create dark corners and shadows and the creepy look of everyday objects in darkness. What do you think, does it work?

This image is actually very carefully referenced, mostly first hand as I went to a museum and did sketches, to make sure things like the clock and ornaments are accurate for the class (poor, working class) and period (um..early 20th century? I think. Doesn't need to be 100% accurate. :aww:) for this house. The china dog is particularly evocative of a certain period in British history!

I'm quite proud of this image, but where do you think it might be improved? I've marked it for critique, and ordinary comments are very much appreciated too. :)

Media used: pencil, watercolour, inks, coloured pencil.

The first thing that strikes me is that the dog's face is looking at me. /creeped out

But his front paw looks like it's kinda angled weird, if you can see that. :>
